Promotion and relegation criteria will be decided on in a team managers' meeting prior to the games.
With the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) regular league season concluded, organisers have resulted to shelving the playoffs for next year.
The KBF Secretary General (SG) Ambrose Kisoi has revealed that the quarters are tentatively scheduled to throw off on January 15 with the format of play maintained as has been in previous seasons.
The top eight finishers will face off in a best-of-three quarters paving way for the last four and the final set to be played in the best-of-five format. The last two teams in the men's top tier league face relegation with relegation and promotion in the other leagues subject to agreements.
"We are set to have a team managers' meeting ahead of the playoffs. Being the custodians of the league and the sport, they will decide on what happens with the unprecedented situation we have found ourselves in where some leagues have fewer teams than the stipulated ones," offered Kisoi.
He continued, "We have had some teams that did not participate in the 2021 league express interests to make a return. We do not wish to punish anyone by locking them out of the league as some had genuine reasons, occasioned by the Covid-19 outbreak, but we also have to consider those teams that played in our decision making."
The team managers' meeting will deliberate on promotion and demotion in the men's division one league that was reduced to five teams with Africa Nazarene (ANU), Zetech Titans, Coastal Kings, KDF Morans and Blazers participating. The men's division two league had 11 teams.
In the Women's league, the top tier was reduced to ten teams as the season began following the withdrawal of Riara University and United States International University (USIU). With two set to be promoted from the division one league, the lower division will be reduced to six teams as only eight were involved in the just concluded regular league.
Ulinzi Warriors and Equity Hawks are looking to defend the titles they won in 2019. The soldiers are eager to book another ticket to the Basketball Africa League (BAL) qualifiers while Hawks eye the Zone Five and Women's Africa Club Championships titles.
