Western clashes keep getting more and more exciting
Kyrie Irving delivered a stellar 35-point performance to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 120-114 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday, overcoming a strong early showing from Anthony Edwards. Edwards appeared set to guide Minnesota to a measure of revenge for last season's Western Conference finals loss to Dallas, exploding for 24 points in a dominant first quarter. He hit six three-pointers and shot 60% from the field to help the Timberwolves build a 34-26 lead after the opening period.
However, Dallas responded, outscoring Minnesota 35-25 in the second quarter to edge ahead 61-59 by halftime. Irving took command in the third, scoring 16 points as the Mavericks opened up an 11-point lead, 93-82, heading into the final quarter. Though Minnesota closed the gap to within two points with just over three minutes to play, Dallas held firm. Luka Doncic nailed a clutch three-pointer, while Irving scored nine points in the fourth to help secure the win.
“We’re resilient and stuck to the game plan,” said Irving. “They were hitting a lot of threes, and it was a high-energy game. We know each other well, so it was a personal one, and I’m just glad we got the win.”
Irving led Dallas in scoring, with Doncic contributing 24 points. P.J. Washington added 17 points, and Daniel Gafford chipped in with 14. Edwards finished with a game-high 37 points for Minnesota, while Julius Randle added 20 in support.
Dallas now stands at 3-1, and Irving praised the team’s development, noting, “We’re finding our rhythm, getting in shape, and building chemistry. We’re valuing every possession, and that’s crucial for us.”
Elsewhere, the Denver Nuggets pulled off a thrilling 144-139 overtime win against the Brooklyn Nets, marking Nikola Jokic’s 150th career triple-double. Jokic recorded 29 points, 18 rebounds, and 16 assists, including a hook shot that forced overtime at 125-125 with nine seconds left. Denver, who went to overtime for the second consecutive game, took control in the extra period, outscoring the Nets 19-14. The win brings the Nuggets to 2-2, with Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon each adding 24 points, while Russell Westbrook contributed 22 off the bench. Dennis Schroder led Brooklyn with 28 points.
In San Francisco, the Golden State Warriors overcame a slow start and the absence of stars Steph Curry and Andrew Wiggins to beat the New Orleans Pelicans 124-106. Despite trailing by 20 points early in the second quarter, the Warriors found their stride after halftime, outscoring the Pelicans 77-55 to clinch the win. Golden State hit 21 three-pointers, with Buddy Hield accounting for seven of them as he finished with 28 points. Zion Williamson led New Orleans with 31 points, while Brandon Ingram scored 30.
In other NBA action, the Sacramento Kings defeated the Utah Jazz 113-96, rounding out an eventful night across the league.
