The ice sports federation has petitioned the government for a standard size rink in the country.

After beginning the year on a high competing in the Friendship Ice Hockey League, Carol Joseph is hoping the year bring with it more exposure for the Kenyan players.

Kenya has only one rink, at the Panari Hotel, which serves East and Central Africa ice sports and as such, the sport is yet to take root in most parts of the country.

Carol who was part of the Kenya Ice Lions who finished second in the Friendship League says trips to South and North Africa as well as overseas competitions will help the Kenyan team improve tremendously.

"Having the Friendship League get our year off was a positive start. We are in a better place and have learned alot from the team that came in from Canada and the US.

As players, we hope to get the chance to build on this start with international competitions. In 2019, we had a team travel to Canada and more of such opportunities would go a long way in making the team better," she offered.

Having started out as a roller skater, Carol says that is the way to go in helping the sport grow seeing as access to the rink is challenging.

"Making the switch to ice hockey was not easy as I had to learn how to skate on ice, stick handling and controlling the puck. However, being able to skate comes in handy as opposed to learning everything from scratch," she added.

The federation of ice sport, recently registered to handle the sport in the country, is hoping to get the right equipment to help the sport grow in Kenya.
