Harpoons emerge winners of inaugural National Masters Swimming Championships

The gala attracted over 200 swimmers from 35 teams

Harpoons Swimming Team are the winners of the inaugural edition of the Kenya Aquatics National Masters Swimming Championships after finishing head and shoulders over their opponents at Sabis International School - Runda indoor pool over the weekend.

The team, thanks to winning both the women and men categories, totaled 587 points, with Little Fish Club coming in second place with 227.

Parklands Sports Club, who finished just a point ahead of Tipwatipwa Swim Team, closed out the podium places with 216 points.

The highlight of the championships that attracted over 200 swimmers from 35 teams was the participation of Ugandan side Formidable Swimming Team, who were led by their captain Dr. Donald Rukare, a towering figure in the aquatic realm.

In attendance to emphasize the broader significance of masters galas while stressing the importance of networking and fostering social capital among adults, Formidable finished eighth with 84 points.

Also important was their invite to the Kenyan side to take part in this year’s Uganda Swimming Federation Masters Championship slated for July 2024 in Kampala.

Among the leading performers at Sabis were: Mourine Gitchie of Harpoons who won the women’s 100 SC Meter Backstroke, Ilako Kanyali of Little Fish in winning the women’s 100 SC Meter IM, with Githae Mwangi and Geoffrey Watene emerging victorious in the age-group 100 SC Meter IM events.

In a display of corporate camaraderie, the banking sector also made waves with teams from ABSA, Central Bank of Kenya, National Commercial Bank, and Kenya Airways Swimming Team participating.

The event garnered extensive support from various sponsors and partners, including: Sabis International School Runda, ORS hydration tablets, Touride Adventures, Ohana Swim Wear, Optiven Limited, Genesis Sports Limited, Kiambu Aquatics, and ICEA Insurance.
