The league took a break this weekend for a coaching and refereeing course in Nairobi and Kajiado respectively
Hunters HC caused one of the league upsets, beating Spartans HC 35-34 in a highly charged match played on Saturday, October 14.
That was just the side’s second win of the season in eight matches, but coach Edwin Wasilwa is not too bothered by such a run, and for good reason.
Being a school-based team, Highway Secondary, the tactician is building his side’s character and getting his charges ready for the 2024 secondary school games as they look to break the national games jinx.
“We have played five very difficult matches for such an inexperienced team and three against beatable sides but lost to one such teams. Against the tougher teams, the target has always been to work on the boys’ confidence, and so far, I have seen the improvement we have been targeting.
We are chasing the much-needed exposure as we eye the national and East African school games. Previously, we lost in the Nairobi region to Hospital Hill, who have been playing in the league as well, and they always use that experience to advance," the tactician offered.
He continued, "We are now working to level the playing field, and I believe we will have a better team this time around. My backcourt and goalkeeping departments have witnessed the biggest growth in those eight matches, and I am confident we will be far better by the time the KSSSA games roll around in January,” offered coach Wasilwa.
His sentiments were echoed by his skipper, George Simiyu, who says playing against more experienced league sides has helped them gain more confidence and get better skill sets to achieve their goals in school games.
Hunters are in 18th place in the 25-team league, headlined by title-chasing Ulinzi HC, with holders National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) on 18 and 16 points, respectively.
Newbies Equity HC and General Service Unit are third and fourth, respectively, with 16 and 14 points while Strathmore HC completes the top five places, having won six of their eight matches.
