Prisons Kenya edged out KPA in the other semi, winning 3-1 (25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21)
Former Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men's league champions General Service Unit (GSU) are a win away from securing a final berth at the ongoing playoffs at Kasarani Indoor Arena.
Playing Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in a best-of-three semis, the David 'Tonje' Kirwa-coached GSU bagged a straight-sets victory of 3-0 (25-21,25-20,25-19) against the Elisha Aliwa coached military side.
It was a closely fought start but GSU managed to tame KDF, who in the last meeting managed to pock two sets from the former champions for a 3-2 loss.
"We had a game plan that worked and I am happy with how my players executed. However, the job is not dome yet so we will come back for game two ready to work and sail through. We cannot be overconfident. We are not yet qualified," coach Kirwa told Mozzart Sport.
The tactician says they are fully focused on the semis match, steering clear of the final talk. The side will face the winner of the match-up between holders Prisons Kenya and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).
"We cannot think of a final we are yet to qualify for. All the focus is on KDF as we are well aware they can overturn the series. We have to stay grounded and get the semis done first," he added.

What a start to the semi-finals for GSU! They delivered an emphatic straight sets win against KDF, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19), in the first of the best of 3 series played at Kasarani Indoor Arena pic.twitter.com/gIEBC7xo88
On his part, Aliwa will hope to cause an upset, coming back from the opening match setback to storm the final but he admits it will not be a walk in the park.
"We went toe-to-toe up to 19 points in the opening two sets but lost concentration in crucial moments hence the loss. Our back court is also not working and GSU capitalised on that for this win.
We have been talking about the same issues in training and I hope we will be in the moment in Game Two as that gives us a chance on Sunday to qualify," Aliwa told Mozzart Sport.
