Groups for 2023 FIBA Women's AfroBasket tournament revealed

Weeks after the confirmation and signing of a deal to formalize Rwanda as the tournament hosts for the 2023 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket competition, the International Basketball Federation - Africa on Friday during the ongoing 18th FIBA Africa General Assembly in Maputo, Mozambique, conducted a draw ceremony that confirmed the groups.
Teams were divided into four groups; Groups A, B, C and D, each consisting of three teams, with tournament hosts Rwanda drawn in Group A.

The 12-nation tournament will be staged at BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda from July 28 to August 6.
As of Friday, June 9, ten countries had their places confirmed in the 12-nation showpiece, leaving out two spots up for grabs.
The two spots - one in Group A and the other in Group B will be decided as follows; the Group A spot will go to the Zone 2/3 Africa winner, with the spot in Zone B going to a wildcard side - one that will be decided on ranks - with the top ranked African nation in FIBA’s ranking presented by Nike taking their place alongside 3rd place finishers in the last edition - Cameroon and Mozambique.
Group A will have hosts Rwanda and Angola with 12 time champions Senegal headlining Group C that will consist of Mali and Uganda.
2021 champions Nigeria are in Group D alongside Zone 5 champions Egypt and DRC.
The FIBA Women’s AfroBasket is the top women’s basketball tournament in Africa which is staged every two years and features the top 12 national teams on the continent.
The inaugural FIBA Women’s AfroBasket was held in Guinea in 1966 and Egypt finished top of the podium after beating the host nation in the final.
