The KBF men's league is set to conclude this weekend paving way for the top-eight league playoffs.

Charles Goro’s Kenya College of Accountancy- University (KCA-U) men’s basketball side has had a rough season in the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) 2021 league, winning just one match, but the tactician has nothing but praise for his young squad.

On Sunday, the varsity side played their final match of the regular league against 2019 finalists Nairobi City Thunder, going down 62-35, a performance Goro terms a tremendous improvement and is hoping to build on it in the off-season as they prepare for a new season.

With the uncertainty on promotion and demotion of teams seeing as the division one league has only five teams, Goro maintains that he is more focused on building a strong squad regardless of the league they play in.

“We lost a majority of our senior players as the season resumed following the Covid-19 interruption and have been on a rebuilding process. The team has made strides and I am confident they will soon be a force to reckon with in the league.

We have a big squad of over 50 players and with another intake in January, I will have a big pool to choose from. The discussion on whether teams will be promoted or relegated is yet to be had but we are ready to play either in the top tier or in the lower division,” said Goro.

The tactician further revealed that they are looking at having two teams in the next season, with one playing in the Nairobi Basketball League (NBA) so as to give as many students as is possible a chance to play as they all cannot fit in one squad.

“With our season officially over, I will have enough time with the squad before the next season throws off to establish which player can fit in which team. Additionally, I am looking to give my small forwards more training as that is the position we have struggled a lot in and if it is sorted we will have a solid team.

With a good swingman who can also shoot and draw fouls, we will be home and dry as the other positions are intact. The players I have in that position are good but are still young in the league and at times lack the quickness and strength on the paint to execute their role perfectly. With a little fine-tuning they will be home and dry,” added Goro.
