On Monday, the paramilitary side faced off with Chui for a 3-0 ( 25-17, 25-20 and 25-19) before seeing off Ngarenaro 3-0 ( 25-11, 25-10, 25-16) on Tuesday.

"We have not faced alot of competition in the group stages as my team is stronger. It is, however, early days and we expect the games to get tougher in the quarters and beyond so we take it one game at a time," offered Tarus.

The Kenyan sides are using the competition as part of their build up towards the 2022 league where GSU will look to bag their sixth consecutive league title while the women's team has pending business as the national league is yet to conclude.

Meanwhile, coach Daniel Bor's charges DCI had their title defence off to a flying start with back-to-back straight-sets victories against Young Spikers and Star Girls.

Against the former DCI were dominate, restricting the seemingly hapless opponent to under ten points in all sets for 25-5, 25-3, 25-8. Star Girls were a better side but still lost 25-10, 25-15, 25-15.

This year's men's competition has attracted 14 teams while the women's category has ten. The men's competition starts at the group stage with three pools while their female counterparts are divided into two groups.
