Roger's heartfelt message to Rafael comes as the Spanish tennis legend prepares to bid farewell to the sport at the Davis Cup in Malaga

With the era-defining rivalry between Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray nearing its end, Nadal’s final official match in doubles against the Netherlands marks the closing of an extraordinary chapter. Federer, already retired, penned a touching tribute to his longtime rival and friend.

Federer began his letter with deep admiration for Nadal’s impact on his career:

"As you prepare to close out your career, there are some things I must say before I get too emotional. Let’s start with the obvious: you’ve beaten me plenty of times. More than I’ve beaten you. You challenged me in ways no one else could. On clay, it felt like stepping into your backyard, and you pushed me to work harder than I ever thought possible just to stay competitive. You even made me change my game – and the size of my racket head – to stand a chance.

"I’m not superstitious, but you elevated everything to a higher level with your rituals: lining up your water bottles like toy soldiers, adjusting your hair and clothing with such intensity. Secretly, I loved it all because it was authentic – it was you. And Rafa, you made me love this game even more," Federer shared emotionally.

Federer reminisced about their first meeting in 2004, highlighting how Nadal burst onto the scene and immediately made waves:

"After winning my first Australian Open in 2004 and becoming world No. 1, I thought I was on top of the world. Then, two months later, you showed up in Miami wearing a sleeveless red shirt, flashing those biceps, and you crushed me. Everything I had heard about this incredible young talent from Mallorca – that you were a generational talent destined to win majors – wasn’t just talk.

"We were at the beginning of our journey together, and now, 20 years later, I have to say: what an incredible run you’ve had. Fourteen Roland Garros titles – a historic feat! You’ve made Spain proud, and the entire tennis world proud. I constantly reflect on the memories we’ve shared: promoting the sport together, playing that match half on grass, half on clay, and the camaraderie we built."

Federer also recounted special moments off the court, from breaking attendance records in Cape Town to attending the inauguration of Nadal’s academy.

"Breaking attendance records with over 50,000 fans in Cape Town was unforgettable. And I’ll always be grateful for the invitation to Mallorca in 2016 to help open the Rafa Nadal Academy – though, truthfully, I kind of invited myself! I knew you’d be too polite to insist, but I didn’t want to miss it.

"You’ve always been a role model for kids worldwide. Mirka and I are so happy our children trained at your academy – they had a fantastic time and learned so much, just like thousands of other young players. Although, I did worry they’d come back home playing left-handed!"

Reflecting on their time together at the 2022 Laver Cup, Federer called it one of the most emotional moments of his career:

"Then there was London – the 2022 Laver Cup, my last match. It meant everything to have you there by my side, not as a rival, but as my doubles partner. Sharing the court with you that night and sharing those tears will forever remain one of the most special moments of my career."

Federer concluded his letter with gratitude and unwavering support for Nadal:

"Rafa, I know you’re focused on the final chapter of your incredible career, and we’ll talk more when it’s over. For now, I want to congratulate your family and team, who have all been instrumental to your success. And I want you to know that your old friend will always be cheering for you – just as loudly for whatever comes next.

"Vamos, Rafa! All the best, your fan."

With this heartfelt message, Federer captured the essence of their storied rivalry, one built on mutual respect, admiration, and an enduring love for tennis.
