The bankers are chasing a maiden title.
Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) men’s league side Equity Dumas, on the weekend, shot down former champions Ulinzi Warriors, coming from behind in the first half to win 58-57 in a match played at Ulinzi Complex.
However, Isaac Munywoki who guided the bankers to the crucial victory has poked holes in the victory saying that despite the win, it was not a satisfactory performance and better has to come.
Munywoki took issue with the team’s execution on offense saying that 58 points was too low a score for a team of their stature let alone for a league match.
“We need to execute better going forward. Scoring 58 points for a win in a premier league match against a top team means offensively we are poor. We had many turnovers and a lot of missed shots that could easily translate to more than the 58 points we scored for the win,” he offered.
The bankers played for four quarters of 15-12, 13-13, 10-25 and 19-8, only winning the match off of a missed free throw from the military side to avoid extra time and carry maximum points for the day.
Dumas made 14 of the attempted 28 field goals and only five of 32 attempts beyond the arc for a 15.6% conversion rate on threes. On the free throw line, the bankers were on a 53.6% making 15 of the 28 attempts.
Additionally, they side caused 16 turnovers compared to Warriors’ ten and stole the ball five times, five times less than the soldiers.
“Looking at the stats, the missed scoring chances surpass the shots made by a huge margin and that should not be the case,” the tactician said.
As the banker’s look to bag their maiden league title when the playoffs come around, the tactician downplayed the win and its possible implications on the seeding.
“This was just a fixture like any other. The hype on who finishes in what position at the conclusion of the regular league was left to the media. We just wanted a win,” he said.
With two matches to play, the bankers are on 36 points, having lost four. Ulinzi lead the standings after 21 matches on 37 points, having suffered five losses.
