Emotional Federer to Rafa: 'I always hoped this day would never come'

Rafael Nadal's retirement announcement caused an earthquake worldwide. Numerous superstars from the world of sports and renowned tennis tournaments are saying goodbye to one of the greatest players tennis has ever seen.

Arguably the most intriguing message came from one of Rafa's fiercest rivals - Roger Federer.

"What a career, Rafa! I always hoped this day would never come. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in the game we love. It's been an absolute honour," the Swiss wrote on social media.

After reaching the semi-finals of Shanghai Masters this morning, the current ATP No. 1, Jannik Sinner also expressed his respect for the Spaniard.

"Thank you for everything you have given to the sport. To have the chance to spend a few weeks training with you a few years ago is something I'll never forget. To watch you work as an athlete but also get to know you as a person off the court was even more special. A true legend of the game who paved the way and taught so many of us how to be as a player and as a person. You will be missed on the tour!" Sinner wrote on X.

One of the greatest football players in history and the Saudi Al-Nassr forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, congratulated Nadal on a fantastic career, wishing him a happy retirement.

"Rafa, what an incredible race you've had! Your dedication, passion and incredible talent have inspired millions around the world. It has been an honor to witness your journey and to be able to call you friend. Congrats on an amazing career! Enjoy your retirement!" CR7 commented on Nadal's retirement post.

Wimbledon's message on X was short, but powerful: "Forever a champion."

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez called Nadal - a big Los Blancos fan - a pride for Spain.

"Rafa Nadal is also a source of pride for our country and is an example of the core values ​​of sport, with which he has forged his entire extraordinary career," Perez said for Real's official website.

Another Real representative, Kylian Mbappe, congratulated Nadal, calling him a legend, in a comment under the Spaniard's social media post.

"Congratulations on your career Rafa, an example as a player and person. Enjoy your retirement. You will always be a legend."

Numerous extraordinary people have expressed their admiration for Rafa, and many more are expected to do so. A true legend.
