Embakasi West MP flags off Umoja Sharks to EA Chipukizi Swimming Championship

The inaugural event is expected to attract scouts from European nations seeking to recruit promising talents into prominent academies

Embakasi West Member of Parliament Mark Mwenje on Thursday 14 December flagged off 34 swimmers from Umoja Sharks Swimming Club to participate in the inaugural edition of the East Africa Chipukizi Swimming Championships scheduled for 16-17 December at Braeburn School - Arusha.

The club, thanks to the legislator, was handed a cheque of Ksh. 150,000 to aid the team with transport and accommodation expenses.

Owing to Eastland's historic dominance in Nairobi swimming galas over the years, Mwenje urged the team of aspiring swimmers to reclaim glory, while also vowing to assist swimmers reach their utmost potential.

Umoja Sharks is one several Kenyan teams expected to participate in the event sanctioned by the Tanzania National Sports Council.

Other teams include: Lukenya Academy, Nyahururu Elite, Condor Swim Club, Woodcreek School, Regis School, Potterhouse School, Juja Preparatory and Senior School, Pioneer School (Murang'a) and Dashing Dolphins.

Tanzanian teams in the championships are expected to be from the cities of Tanga, Moshi, Arusha (hosts), Dar Es Salaam and Morogoro.

The championships will also attract scouts from European nations seeking to recruit promising talents into the Nastic Sports Swimming Academy, where swimming training will be coupled by academics.

Running concurrently in Arusha will be the East Africa Chipukizi Soccer Cup, a renowned football tournament attracting over 300 teams from across Africa, and that was established over a decade ago as the continent's largest youth soccer event.

Among the sponsors of the event will be Future Stars Academy, Genesis Sports Limited and Touride Adventures.
