The Burundian side refused to weat jerseys with "Visit Rwanda" logo
Dynamo Basketball Club has been kicked out of the 2024 Basketball Africa League (BAL) due to a uniform dispute. This decision follows the team's second forfeit, bringing an early end to their BAL campaign this season.
Amadou Gallo Fall, President of the BAL, confirmed the expulsion, pointing to Dynamo BC's repeated failure to follow league rules on uniforms. The controversy began when the team covered up the "Visit Rwanda" logo on their uniforms with black tape during their first game against Cape Town Tigers, sparking widespread debate.
“Dynamo Basketball Club (Burundi) has further refused to comply with the Basketball Africa League’s rules and requirements governing jerseys and uniforms, thereby forfeiting today’s game against Petro de Luanda (Angola) and its participation in the 2024 BAL season. Under FIBA rules, two forfeitures in the same tournament trigger the club’s automatic withdrawal. This is a very unfortunate situation for the players and fans, and we share the frustrations of everyone involved. All remaining Kalahari Conference games will be played as scheduled, and we look forward to engaging fans in Pretoria through expanded fan and community events.” The President said in a statement.
Efforts to resolve the issue fell short, leading to Dynamo BC's decision to forfeit their next game against Petro de Luanda (Angola). According to FIBA rules, two forfeits in a single tournament result in expulsion.
The expulsion of Dynamo BC highlights tensions between Burundi and Rwanda, casting a shadow over regional relations.
