The highly rated golfer has carded dismal scores since Covid-19struck and ensuing financial ruin closed his home golf course
Hard-hitting Mumias golfer Dismas Indiza hopes to do better at the Safari Tour’s seventh leg set for Nyali Golf Course from January 30 to February 2 as it will help cement his place in the list of Kenyan professionals who will play at the Magical Kenya Open on March 18-21.
Currently second on the order of merit, Indiza has had a tough time preparing for the Safari Tour. His preparation efforts were in shambles as his home course had been abandoned after Covid-19 hit and Mumias Sugar Company almost closed down.
For him to enjoy a round of golf, he had to drive to Kakamega, 40kms away, to access a decent course. To cut on cost, he bore the cost of clearing 350 yards on the range and maintain one of the greens at the Mumias course just to have a place he could practice his swings and putts.
Effects of such poor preparations had their toll on the golfer as he missed the cut in Safari Tour opening leg in Limuru. He, however, recovered well to clinch the third leg hosted at Vetlab and has held on to remain second behind Greg Snow.
In the last leg held at Great Rift Valley Lodge, Indiza did not play his best golf as he finished ninth, carding 73,79,71 and 75 for a 14 over par 298 at the par 71 course that proved difficult for most golfers.
“I had to contend with traveling to Kakamega for any golf practice or action as using the range and green that I had prepared in Mumias became difficult. My game is not bad but I struggled in Great Rift. However, I am hoping to play better in Nyali and maintain my position. I am in a good position so I am not worried about missing out on the Kenya Open slots,” said Indiza adding that he will be looking to make the cut at this year’s Open after missing out in the 2019 money bracket.
Greg Snow won the first leg at Limuru while Zimbabwe’s Robson Chinhoi won the second leg of the Tour at Royal Nairobi. David Wakhu carried the day at the fourth leg held at Sigona leg before Chinhoi went back to winning ways at the Uganda Professionals Open Champion after an impressive 15-under at Kitante in Kampala. Justas Madoya picked a three-over-par 287 to win at his backyard in Great Rift.
