Kenya won 17 medals in the previous event in 2022

After months of uncertainty concerning the hosts of this year’s Africa Boxing Confederation Zone Three Championships, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania was on Monday confirmed as the 2023 destination for the 14-nation regional event expected to kick off on April 11 to 18.

In a communication sent out by Zone Three Secretary General Lukelo Willilo, the eight day event will be staged at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

According to the Boxing Federation of Kenya calendar for this year, the Zone 3 Championships had been initially set on March 16 to 22, with no information on the venue confirmed.

In addition to the hosts announcement, AFCB Communications reported about other issues addressed in the BFT first executive meeting held on Sunday March 5 that revolved around plans to have Star 1 coaching courses parallel to the Zone 3 Championships and Tanzania’s participation in the IBA Women’s and Women’s World Championships.

The Democratic Republic of Congo hosted last year’s event held early April last year.

Kenya finished second then, with a decent medal haul of 17 medals; six golds, five silvers and six bronze.

DRC finished top with 38 total medals - 13 of them being gold - as Cameroon and Mauritius rounded off the third and fourth positions respectively.

Boxing Federation of Kenya is in receipt of the venue confirmation and will hope to field a capable team in the tournament that also involves countries like Somalia, Congo, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda.
