In March, Ajowi qualified for Tokyo Olympics Games by virtue of a decent heavyweight ranking at continental level.

Olympics-bound Elly Ajowi who will carry Kenya's flag in the heavyweight boxing category at the Tokyo Games is currently putting in the work in his training to pick up the speed he needs to compete with the world's best in Japan.

Ajowi qualified for the Games after World qualifiers in France were called off due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic and instead the Tokyo Olympics boxing task force resulted to use rankings to hand boxers the remaining tickets.

"We took a short break after sporting activities were suspended but I am elated to be back after we got the go ahead to resume training. I am back in the gym and top of my training is working on my speed. I know the competition will be tough at the Olympics but I want to make my debut at the global showpiece count," expressed Ajowi in an interview.

As part of their preparations for the July Olympics, the national team 'Hit Squad' that has four pugilists, Ajowi, Nick Okoth, Christine Ongare and Elizabeth Akinyi, is set to fly out later this week for a seven-day International tournament in Russia.

The Konstantin Korotkov Memorial Boxers’ Cup will be held from May10-18 in the city of Khabarovsk at Lenina Regional Sports Complex Stadium. The quartet will face top European boxers who are equally shaping up for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The quartet will be accompanied by head coach Musa Benjamin and assistant coaches David Munuhe and John Waweru as well as Communication Director Duncan Kuria while the team manager will be Kenya Police chairman Linus Ouma.
