The Magical Kenya Open (MKO) golf tournament received a major boost after inking a sponsorship with ABSA Bank worth Ksh 60 million.
The DP World Tour will take place from Thursday 20 February to Sunday 23 February at the Muthaiga Golf Club and will attract participants from across the globe.
The multi-million sponsorship deal strengthens the bank's relationship with Kenyan golf which can be tracedto 14 years ago.
The unveiling took place on Monday 10 February 2025 at Muthaiga Sports Club and was unveiled by the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Sports, Eng. Peter K.Tum and attended by ABSA Bank officials as well as Golf stakeholders and officials from Kenya.
Speaking during the unveiling at the tournament’s venue, PS Tum appreciated the bank for the partnership, stating the importance of the private sector in the development of sports.
“Every great sporting success is built on collaboration. Absa’s continued support for the 56th Magical Kenya Open strengthens golf’s growth in Kenya,” said Tum.
The former Health PS went ahead to explain the relationship between sports and corporates and how the latter can develop from the numbers attracted by Sporting events while also helping in the development of sports infrastructure and talent development.
“With over 400 million viewers in 2024 across 70+ countries, the Magical Kenya Open is a strategic platform for brand visibility and market expansion and not just a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR),” he added.
Tum assured that the money will be used for its intended purpose and accounted for while emphasizing that growth must be realized from the investment that is directed to sports.
On his part, Absa Bank Kenya PLC CEO Abdi Mohamed reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to sports and discussed the benefits that sports bring to the economy.
“At Absa, we empower Africa’s tomorrow, one story at a time. Beyond the fairways, MKO drives tourism, hospitality, and small business growth,” he noted.
Other notable dignitaries at the event included Kenya Open Golf Limited Chairman Peter Kanyago and Kenya Golf Union Chairman David Ndugu.
The tournament was founded in Kenya in 1967 and has largely been taking place at the Muthaiga Golf Club course.
