Kisumu Queens Hockey Club makes a stunning debut in the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Women's Super League, defeating GHF Rift Pirates 3-0 in their first-ever match
Kisumu Queens Hockey Club has announced their arrival in competitive hockey with a bang, hammering GHF Rift Pirates 3-0 in their first ever Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Women’s Super League match played at two venues on Saturday.
Initially booked at Kisumu's Simba Club, the match had to be shifted to neighboring Kisumu Day Grounds from the second quarter after heavy rains rendered the (Simba's) surface unplayable.
Celestine Odoyo made history by scoring Queens first league goal on nine minutes, before Fiona Akinyi doubled the lead on 46 minutes.
The coach Brian Aduda's side put the game to rest, scoring the third and final in the 52nd minute through Clare Mmosi.
"The ladies surprised me," an elated Brian Aduda, Kisumu Queens coach, told Mozzart Sport. "We've been training together for a year now, but to get such a huge result in our first game was truly something special," he added.
"I'm impressed with the level of discipline they have shown so far, on and off the pitch. They took my instructions well and implemented them," he added.
The loud statement they've made, Aduda believes will earn them respectability in the league moving forward.
"I'm very sure any team approaching us now will come expecting some competition," the former Kenya international said.
The Royals, as Queens call themselves, travel to Nairobi for a long weekend next week with two games on the cards.
They will open their first away encounter against former Premier League side Sliders on Saturday at City Park before taking on Vickings a day layer at the same venue.
"Our focus now is how we get the ladies to play in Nairobi next weekend. It's a challenge for us as a self sponsored community club, but we're doing our best."
Aduda is hopeful that with good performances, the team will attract support from not only the community, but also the corporate world.
