Basketball revolution: NBA Europe on the menu as soon as next season

European and world basketball is close to experiencing an unprecedented earthquake in the history of its competitions.

According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, the NBA and FIBA ​​have already begun to negotiate the creation of NBA Europe, the European division of the best basketball league in the world.

Does this mean that Barcelona will play the Lakers? No. It means the European division would be the fifth competition of the same brand after NBA, WNBA, Development League and NBA Africa. In fact, if it depends on the NBA, this agreement can be launched as early as next season.

The discontent shown by several Euroleague clubs that has led to the departure of Jordi Bertomeu, CEO of the competition, for the next season, has caused the steps to be accelerated for the creation of this NBA Europe, as confirmed by various sources to this newspaper.

The NBA commissioner Adam Silver has already sent a letter to the still CEO of the Euroleague, Jordi Bertomeu, expressing his intention to shape this new conference, with the best teams from the Old Continent, which have already begun to draw up their exit of the maximum European competition.

It is not the first time that there is talk of the creation of a European division of the NBA. Although this time it does seem like a real option. In 2012 the then-commissioner David Stern already talked about it.

"There are reasons to seriously think that franchises could be created in Europe," admitted then Stern, who always dreamed of expanding the NBA. "We have decided that it is something we had to talk about again.''

Now, another ten years have passed and the whole project is taking shape.
