First senior tournament staged in Nairobi sets the tone for qualifying.

Badminton Kenya has started its preparations for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games slated for July 28th to August 8th in the United Kingdom.

The Federation held its first senior national badminton tournament, Nairobi Open at Parklands, Nairobi, on Saturday 12 February.

In the men's singles event finals, Edwin Akwanyi beat Abner Baron to pick his first title of the season while in the women's singles, 17-year-old Theerta Vannemeredy beat Maryann Makongo to pick the title.

"Right now I am not looking at a particular international tournament. I am training to ensure I have the right techniques in the court," said Makongo after picking the first runner's up position in the single women's final.

There are two more open tournaments scheduled for Nakuru in March and Kiambu in April to prepare more players for the Games. The top eight players will be considered for the Commonwealth qualifiers scheduled for April even though there will be the Nakuru Open in March to prepare the national players.

"We shall be doing our national trials in April, we will select the top eight in singles, doubles and in the mixed event. All that will depend on the slots we shall be allocated for badminton," said Badminton Kenya president Peter Muchiri.

Triangle sports Badminton Challenge organizer Alfred Muthomi said that the tournament is meant to give players from various regions a chance to compete and prepare irrespective of their age and economic status.
