Angella Okutoyi jets back after record breaking Wimbledon feat

18-year old Kenyan tennis sensation Angella Okutoyi is expected back in the country on Monday night after her record breaking exploits in the 2022 Junior Wimbledon Championships.

At the just concluded prestigious competition, the teenager went down into the history books as the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam tournament when she lifted the Girls’ Doubles title together with Dutch partner Rose Marie Nijkamp.

Making just her third appearance in a major tennis tournament, after bows in the Australian Open and the Roland Garros, the Kenyan youngster, together with Nijkamp, defeated the Canadian pair of Kayla Cross and Victoria Mboko 3-6, 6-4 (11-9) to write the history books by lifting the crown.

Following the feat, the 2021 African Junior Champion is expected to receive a heroes welcome when she touches down at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 2116EAT from London.

"It is such an honour flying Angella Okutoyi - the first Kenyan to win a Wimbledon title. At the Pride of Africa we are extremely proud of you and feel privileged taking you home,” Kenya Airways posted a picture with Okutoyi on board at London’s Heathrow Airport.

The tennis prodigy has already drawn a lot of interest with President Uhuru Kenyatta leading in giving tribute to her record breaking achievements.

"President Uhuru Kenyatta has congratulated teenage tennis sensation Angela Okutoyi for being the first Kenyan to win a Grand Slam,” a statement from State House read.

President Kenyatta hailed Okutoyi's historic victory as a momentous achievement that has not only lifted Kenya's profile in world tennis but that will also inspire a generation of young players to excel in the sport.
