In Game One of three, former champions General Service Unit (GSU) and Kenya Pipeline picked straight-set wins, leaving them just a victory away from lifting the 2024/25 league men's and women’s titles.
The losing sides, chasing maiden titles, have their work cut out. KPA’s Dennis Omollo, in an interview with Mozzart Sport, maintains that they have what it takes to overturn the result and force a decider clash on Sunday.
“We had a slow start, and it took some time to get into rhythm. The reception did not go our way, and that affected our attack and defense, areas where GSU capitalized to take the game. Our team is also known for strong services, but Saturday’s match was different. Our accuracy was wanting,” Omollo opened up.
The Kenyan International admits that KPA’s playing style is not significantly different from that of their opponents, but if they stick to their system, the match would be theirs.
“The last five matches against GSU this season have come down to small margins, and that is what we need to take care of on Saturday: handle the basics correctly. It is a must-win for us, but we are under no pressure. We will bring our A game and fight for the win,” Omollo added.
On his part, GSU’s middle blocker Shadrack Misiko believes that his side will need to remain focused from the first to last whistle, admitting that lapses gave KPA glimmers of hope in Friday’s game.
“We expect KPA to come hard at us today, as this is a revenge mission for them, but we are mentally ready and keen not to drop the ball in such a crucial match. Just like yesterday, we plan to have a strong start and finish the same way,” Misiko says.
While admitting that KPA boasts better depth than the paramilitary side, Misiko says this has worked in GSU’s favour. “We know they have a stronger bench, but in all our meetings this season, we have used that as fuel to go the extra mile. It has helped us find a winning edge, and we will dig into that today,” he added, further assuring that the Gideon Tarus charges are keen to end the series this afternoon.
