The veteran volleyballer lost her mother in law and husband recently
The national women’s volleyball team captain Mercy Moim is expected in the country today after suffering a double tragedy.
Moim was forced to return home following the untimely death of her husband Joseph Asuza and her mother-in-law. She was representing the country in the African Games in Accra, Ghana when she received the tragic news.
Her husband’s life was claimed by a fatal road accident that happened on Sunday afternoon near along Thika Road. Police reports indicate that he sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to Guru Nanak Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.
Her departure is a blow to the Malkia Striker. She has been instrumental to their run so far, guiding them past Seychelles and Nigeria in the opening pool matches where they registered an impressive three sets to none.
This effectively means that she will not be in action when the Strikers take on DRC Congo in the final pool match. The team will also operate without a captain.
Confirming the news, Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) deputy president Paul Bitok noted that they acted fast and she was accompanied by her chaperone Caroline Oriedo to Kenya.
“They have for many years relied on her for guidance, especially on such big stages and I do not know how they will operate without her. However, the best thing they can do for her and her family is to win the title,” Bitok said.
Team Kenya executive director James Akama also condoled with the captain, calling on all volleyball enthusiasts to stay strong during these tough times.
“Team Volleyball kindly accept our sincere condolences to your captain Mercy Moim for the double loss of her dear husband and mother-in-law. The entire Planning Committee is saddened with this sad news and we pray for God's mercies and comfort for Mercy during this trying moment,"
“The entire volleyball team kindly take heart, have peace, and be strong as you represent our country during your remaining matches. We wish you all the best and may the good Lord rest the souls of the departed in eternal peace,” Akama concluded.
