Defending champions Prisons Kenya headline the standings after six wins in as many matches with 17 points, five more than KPA and the bankers

Fresh from lifting their first-ever national trophy at the Kipchumba Karori Eldoret International Volleyball tournament, held in December, Equity Bank Volleyball team is looking to build on that momentum as they head to the third leg of the KVF league.

Under coach Patrick Owino, the bankers stunned favourites Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) to be crowned champions in Eldoret, a statement win that the tactician says has set the tone for their race to a maiden league title.

The third Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) league leg, initially scheduled for Iten on 23 January has since been moved to Nyayo Stadium and will run from 30 January to 2 February with the bankers pitted against former champions General Service Unit (GSU), KAPU and Administration Police (AP).

“We got back to training this week and preparations are going well as we prepare for what will be an acid test. We face tricky fixtures with GSU’s track record presenting us with a tough start. KAPU, albeit fairly new to the league, boast very experienced players while AP are not to be underestimated,” Owino opened up.

With their recent success in Eldoret, the tactician who joined Equity late last year, says the team needs to be at their best to bag maximum points when action returns.

“We have a target on our backs,” Owino admits. “While winning is a huge morale boost to the squad as it has restored self-belief, we know teams will now come hard at us but we are working to be ready for whatever they throw at us.”

Owino’s sights are set on delivering the title for the bankers, arguing that the changes made so far are bearing fruits, putting the side in prime position to fight for the title. After six matches, Equity have lost two to place third on 12 points heading to the third leg.

“We had to work on team chemistry as well as our defense, both blocks and backcourt. The adjustments made ahead of the second leg and the Eldoret tournament have transformed the squad and we hope to do more before the third leg as we target maximum points,” the tactician explained.

Defending champions Prisons Kenya headline the standings after six wins in as many matches with 17 points, five more than KPA and the bankers who are separated by set ratio.
