Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) girls’ handball-winning coach Godfrey Simiyu says his side’s run in the just-concluded school games was a perfect build-up for the upcoming national team assignment.

The tactician led Moi Girls Kamusinga to gold in the handball final, edging Uganda’s Mbogo 26-25 to claim their second regional crown. A majority of the players in action are expected to be part of Team Kenya at the 2025 African Women's Junior (U19) Handball Championship in Oran, Algeria, from Saturday, 6 to 13 September.

In a draw held on 31 July at the CAHB headquarters in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, the Kenyan U19 side was pooled in Group B alongside Angola, Guinea, hosts Algeria, Mali, and Réunion. Group A has Egypt, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Congo DR, Burkina Faso, and Zambia.

With the continental competition set to act as a qualification tournament for the 2026 Women's Junior World Handball Championship, the stakes are high, but coach Simiyu says his squad’s focus will first be on reaching the knockout stages before anything else.

“The team that was in Uganda is still available, and we have been polishing our defense, which was shaky during the IHF Zone Five competition,” Simiyu opens up, adding that the team is ready physically, as they have been active since the May competition in Uganda, where Kenya picked both U17 and U19 titles.

What’s more, Kamusinga’s run in KSSSA and FEASSSA games has been a perfect training opportunity for Simiyu.

“We have used the school event to work on not only our tactical abilities but also on team chemistry. From our performance in Uganda, there has been a massive improvement in our confidence, and we will build on the same as we expect tough competition in Algeria,” he added.
