Nigeria head to the championship as two-time defending champions

National women's basketball team, Kenya Lionesses, will do battle against hosts Cameroon and Cape Verde in pool A of the Women's Afrobasket due on September 17 to 26.

The George Mayienga-coached side beat Egypt in the FIBA Zone Five Afrobasket qualifiers to lift the zonal trophy and book an automatic slot to the continental showpiece. In 2019, Lionesses participated through a wild card.

The groups were confirmed on Saturday 31 July 2021 at a draw ceremony held in Yaounde. The 12 teams are divided into four groups of three teams each.

Zone six winner will be in group B that currently has Nigeria and Mozambique while a wild card participant yet to be determined completes group D that has Mali and Ivory Coast.

The top team in each group advances to the quarter finals while second and third place finishers play a qualification round for a chance to the quarters. The same format was used during the men's inaugural Afro-CAN in Mali.

Winners of the quarters pairings advance to the semis while the losers play a classification Games for fifth to eighth place.
