At the regional level, their faith was put to the test, but they eventually dethroned Maseno School 10-8 in the high-tempered final.
Kisii High School Rugby team is exuding confidence ahead of the much-anticipated Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) rugby 15s term one games, which will kick off on Tuesday, April 9 in Machakos.
The team has been in a class of its own since the games started. They retained the Kisii County Rugby 15s title after pummeling hosts Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho 51-3 to qualify for the Nyanza regional championship. They made history in that match by scoring seven converted tries, one unconverted try, and two well-taken penalties.
At the regional level, their faith was put to the test, but they eventually dethroned Maseno School 10-8 in the high-tempered final.
It was that match that saw Maseno walk out with only five minutes left on the clock, citing poor officiating. After deliberations from match officials, Kisii was declared champion while Maseno settled for second.
Heading to the national stage, the boys have been placed in Pool A, which sees them lock horns with All Saints Embu, Butula Boys, and Rift Valley region winners St. Patrick’s Iten.
They will start their campaign with a match against the Butula Boys. Last year, they came too close to winning the national title but went down 11-8 to 2023 KSSSA rugby 15s champions Butula Boys after a spirited fight.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, the team’s coach, Nelvine Lumiti noted that they were keen to go past their hurdle, the Butula Boys.
“Last year, they defeated us. We finished our campaign there and we will begin it from the and secure a win. The boys are ready both mentally, emotionally, and physically,” Lumiti started.
The coach was counting on the experiences gained from their test matches against former Kenya Cup side Kisii RFC to propel them to greatness.
“As part of our preparations, we competed in test matches with Kisii RFC. We have also been doing gym work and conditioning. Our players also give their best, assuring us of success,” Lumiti offered.
He was also grateful to the school through Principal Fred Mogaka for his support to the players.
In Pool B, Kitondo, Marafa, Lenana, and Mang’u High will face off.
