The dockers open the season against Eagle Wings in Mombasa this weekend.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) women’s basketball side has added three players to their 2022/23 league squad as coach Antony Ojukwu looks to churn positive results on both national and continental fronts this season.

The defending champions have acquired the services of Kenya Lionesses and former Storms point guard Jemimah Omondi, shooting guard Linda Alando and center player Belinda Okoth, the two joining from rival Equity Hawks.

“My experience as a tactician has taught me that having both experienced and youthful players keeps a team on top for the long haul and that is my target. The most important part, however, is to have a squad that can win one matches and championship so I had to bolster my squad with that in mind.

In addition to the three, we are in talks with a post player who comes in to add to our depth. Talks will be finalized soon as we look to have the squad duly registered before our first match of the season,” offered Ojukwu.

The champions begin their season at home against Eagle Wings in a match scheduled for 11 June at the Makande Hall. Ojukwu says preparations for the season have been good and they are ready for the challenge ahead.

“We had pre-season camp where we played friendly matches in Kigali and Kampala and we managed to get the players in good shape. We are not yet where we are supposed to be but another week of retreat in Malindi and training in Mombasa has the players ready for action,” Ojukwu explains.

This weekend, however, the side will miss the services of post player Medina Okot currently away with the national team preparing for 3x3 assignments. However, Ojukwu is confident her absence will barely be felt given the depth of his squad.
