Juma, stopped another favourite, Amos Amenya, in round three of the semis to make it to the final
Mombasa-based boxer Mwinyi Kombo will face off with sensational form two Mwiki Secondary School student Chris ‘Giant Killer’ Juma in the final of the Kenya Open featherweight bout at Uhuru Park, Nairobi on Saturday.
Kombo, a Prisons Kenya pugilist, made it to the final after catching Africa's silver medalist, KDF’s Sam Njau, unawares for a Knock Out (KO) in the semis played at the same venue on Friday night.
On his part, the sensational schoolboy, Juma, stopped another favourite, Amos Amenya, in round three of the semis to make it to the final. On his way to the semi-final, Juma scored a shocking points win over 2019 African Games silver medalist Shaffi Bakari of Police.
Back to Njau vs Kombo featherweight semi-final
Njau, normally a clean polished boxer, did not expect Kombo’s game plan. He decided to fight Njau, carrying the fight to him with non-stop left and right flurries which disoriented Njau, who received one standing count.
What was obvious from the fight is that Kombo’s punches were stronger and he also showed more hunger for victory, knocking out Njau in the first round in a rather bizarre manner.
It appeared like he pushed Njau down. Referee Samuel Otieno ruled it a KO.
Kombo is a product of Mombasa's Kongowea Boxing Club which is under coach William Okumu who has produced several promising boxers, among them international Ann Wanjiru who, together with Kombo, have moved to Prisons.
Njau was the second KO victim from KDF for Kombo after knocking out Isaac Meja on Thursday.
Once again, it's back to the drawing board for Njau, a silver medalist at the 2022 Africa Championships in Maputo, Mozambique.
