Kenyan teams dominate as ITF/CAT Eastern Africa Junior team Championships draws curtains

A total of six countries took part in the boys category. The others were Rwanda, Tanzania and Seychelles

Kenyan teams dominated as the ITF/CAT Eastern Africa Junior Team Championships came to an end at Nairobi Club on Thursday.

The hosts won the Under-16 categories for boys and girls as well as the girls Under-14 category while finishing runners-up in the boys under-14 category.

In the boys Under-16 category, Kenya finished at the top of the standings after collecting five points. The team won 14 matches and lost just once.

Burundi finished runners-up with four points while Uganda were third with three points.

A total of six countries took part in the boys category. The others were Rwanda, Tanzania and Seychelles.

In the girls' Under-16 category, Kenya finished on top of the group with four points and was followed by Burundi and Tanzania who collected three and two points respectively. Rwanda finished at the bottom of the group having lost all their matches.

In the girls' Under-14 category, Kenya beat Burundi to emerge champions while in the boys' category, the hosts lost to neighbours Uganda in the final to finish runners-up.

Jeff Hesbon Okuku started off Kenya’s dominance in the Under-16 category by winning his match against Hordi Francis Bireha from Burundi 6-1, 6-0 court one. Adjacently on court two, Bathsheba Ogamba from Kenya edged out Chantal Niyimbabazi from Burundi 6-1, 6-2 in an under-14 match.

Tanzania’s Faith Njamakuya was too strong for Thierine Ineza from Rwanda in a girls' Under-16 fixture which she won 7-5, 6-4.

Fred Cleofasi picked another win for Tanzania in the boys Under-16 category after beating Anelson Niyonshuti from Rwanda 6-2, 6-3. Uganda’s Abdul Latif also won his match beating Naddy Michael Joubet from Seychess 6-0, 6-0.

The five-day tournament was a culmination of a busy tennis schedule of three events that began early this month at Nairobi Club. First was the ITF WS 35 which ran for two weeks and was followed by the ITF/CAF individual tournament and finally the team event.
