The Rwandese side finished second in the last Zone Five championship, going on to reach the semis of the AWBL
With two slots up for grabs, Rwanda Energy Group (REG) have gone for Kenyan talent, roping in Kenya Lionesses duo of Mercy Wanyama and Victoria Reynolds for the Women's Basketball League-Africa (WBL-Africa) Qualifiers.
The 11-team competition set to tip off on Sunday 27 October at the newly-constructed Amaan Indoor Arena in Zanzibar.
The Rwandese league runners-up finished fourth in the Africa Women’s Basketball League (AWBL) last year, falling to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) in the semis and Inter Clube of Angola in the third-place playoffs, despite having WNBA stars Tiffany Mitchell and Nia Clouden among other star players.
Reynolds who featured for KPA then, making the team of the tournament alongside Most Valuable Player (MVP) Cierra Dillard, Alexandria Sporting's Hagar Amer, top rebounder Madina Okot (KPA) and Destiney Promise Philoxy, links up with the latter at REG.
"I am ready," declared Reynolds in an interview with Mozzart Sport. "It doesn't matter who we are coming up against. The target is to qualify. I know it is not a walk in the park but we have the talent and depth to deliver."
Wanyama, on her part, last featured in the Zone Five club competition in 2017, representing Equity Bank Hawks.
"It feels good to be back after seven years. This one will be different but I am here to give my best. Teams have beefed up squads with more experienced players which was not the case the last time I played. It is going to be interesting, but we are ready," Wanyama said.
With both KPA and Equity Hawks, teams the Kenyan International has featured for, also competing here, Wanyama admits it is tough playing against her former teammates.
"This is like fighting your own blood, it is going to be hard but this is a job we have to execute on. I am aware of the history REG have in this competition and the plan is to get better results. Winning the qualifiers and the title in December would mean a lot. It will not be easy but we will fight," she concluded.
