St. Patrick’s Iten topped the boys category while St. Monica emerged emerged victorious among the girls
St. Patrick’s Iten from Eldoret was the top boys' school at the just concluded Kenya National Youth Chess Championships which culminated at Kisii High School on Wednesday.
Iten collected 51 points to emerge top ahead of Friend’s School Kamusinga who got 28 points.
At third place was Kisii School who tied with Strathmore School both at 28 points.
In the girls category, St. Monica emerged top with 75 points followed by Moi Girls Eldoret who got 47 points.
Singore Girls emerged third after collecting 30 points.
Mudasa Academy from Kisumu emerged top in the girls primary category collecting 53 points behind Juja St. Peter School who got 47 points and the Msingi School finished third with 37 points.
In the boys' primary section, Mudasa Academy topped with 45 points while Sukari Presbyterian Academy were third with 32 points and Msingi School finished third with 28 points.
Elsewhere Out of the 12 categories, 10 were decided outright with all the champions scoring maximum eight points except in the under-18 boys category where the winner, Isaiah Otiemo of Mang’u High School scored 7.5/8 points
There were playoffs in the under-18 open and under-12 open.
The under-10 tiebreak was won by Ram Yashmith of Montessori Learning Centre after defeating Floyd Wasonga of Sapphire School- Kisumu but the latter was still declared National champion since Yashmith is not a Kenyan citizen.
Abel Taji of Seedlings Junior School defeated Jeshurun Oluchiri of Rafiki School in the under-12 tiebreaker.
In the under-12 girls category, Chanel McKenzie of Banda School emerged winner ahead of favorites Elizabeth Cassidy Maina, of Kitale School and Fantalis Nduta from Nyeri Moi Complex School.
Angel Kagambi of St. Joseph Catholic pre-primary and Primary School won the under-14 girls category on maximum points while Paul Olando Junior, from Moi Educational Centre won the boys category.
Erica Mumbi of Kianda School won the girls under-16 category while Hawi Kaloki of Brookside School won the boys category.
Bernice Wambui of St. Peters Juja who was the 2021 Africa Youth Championship silver medalist in Accra Ghana won the under-18 girls category.
