The tournament will feature three hotly contested categories: Under 14 Boys and Girls, Under 17 Boys and Girls and Open Division
For the first time in history, Kenya will host a National Water Polo Tournament, scheduled for Potterhouse Senior School along Kiambu Road on Saturday, 17 and Sunday, 18 May.
In a landmark achievement, Kenya Aquatics announced that schools and clubs will take part in the event, ticking off a huge promise the federation made after their election.
Only on several occasions has Kenya Aquatics hosted water polo events - an in-house competition last year at the Mpesa Foundation Academy in Thika.
Among the top swimming contenders expected to participate in the tournament include: Murang’a Aquatics, Rosslyn Academy, Peponi School, Peponi House, West Nairobi School, Hillcrest School, USIU University, MKU University, Torpedo Club, Rupaz Club, Kisumu Club, Nova Pioneer, Potterhouse School, Mpesa Foundation, Aga Khan Academy, Genesis Sports Limited, Y Lagoons, Black Star Water polo (Ghana) and the coastal titans from Mombasa Club.
The tournament is largely being viewed as a team route to the 2032 Olympics, and a shot at hosting the very first Africa Aquatics Water Polo Championship.
“This is more than a tournament—it’s a statement,” said Paul Muigai, Team Kenya Water Polo coordinator.
“We’ve invited schools and clubs from within Kenya and internationally. We’re calling on all aquatic lovers to come in large numbers and witness the beautiful game of water polo.
We’re urging schools to introduce water polo and start training learners from an early age.”
The tournament will feature three hotly contested categories: Under 14 Boys and Girls, Under 17 Boys and Girls and Open Division (mixed gender teams are welcome).
Each match will be played over four thrilling quarters of eight minutes, promising high-octane action from start to finish.
Teams are expected to register 13 players (seven starters and six reserves) and will be guided by a maximum of two coaches on the bench.
A pre-match briefing for referees and officials will be held on Friday, 16 May, through physical and online meetings to ensure smooth play in the pool.
