"I vomited nine times, plus diarrhea" says Olympic swimmer

The soon to be over Paris Olympics had their share of controversy. From the opening ceremony and the gender issues at women boxing to the polluted Seine river which caused problems for swimmers. Since the opening of the games, the trainngs and competitions in the Seine river were canceled due to pollution at least five times. Eventually the races happened, but one of the participants fell ill.

Leonie Beck competed last Thursday, August 8 and finished ninth with a time of 2:06:13.4, although what she did not know was the gastrointestinal problem that the experience would cause her. The German open water swimmer posted on her Instagram account: "I vomited nine times yesterday, plus diarrhea". The swimmer was suffering from severe health problems after having competed in the Seine in race with more than 10 kilometers of dirty water The current European champion was not the only one.

"I was thirsty and needed something to drink, so I thought: 'I'll drink from the Seine now'. I didn't care what anyone said about it. The water was nice and cold, it didn't taste like anything" said Olympic gold medalist Sharon van Rouwendaal from the Netherlands.

The Belgian media reported on the hospitalization of triathlete Claire Michel after swimming in the Seine on the same day as the Spanish Anna Godoy and Miriam Casillas.

"Unfortunately, Claire Michel, a member of the Belgian relay team, is ill and we must withdraw from the competition. After four days of illness, the triathlete was admitted to hospital on Sunday with an E. coli infection ," said the statement from the Belgian Olympic Committee (COIB).
