Former Kenyan international and right-arm medium-pace bowler Lameck Onyango has been appointed as the new Kenya men’s national team head coach on an interim basis, Mozzart Sport can confirm.
The decision to appoint him was reached by the Cricket Kenya board in recent weeks, and after much deliberations on the future of the men’s sport, Onyango was elected to be the best man to hold the position before a call on who to be the next permanent coach is made.
Onyango, who acted recently as player cum coach for NPCA side Shree Cutchhi Leva Patel Samaj, will replace former head coach David Obuya - who was on duty for the side in their latest assignment - The Continent Cup Twenty20 International (T20I) held in Nairobi in July.
As per sources close to the development, Onyango will work in close association with Kenya’s cricketing legends including former Botswana coach Joseph Angara, who will offer assistance both on a technical and organizational capacity.
The 49 year old and former Swamibapa bowler’s first assignment will be to offer a facelift for the side that lost to Uganda in the Continent Cup final, and will also be tasked in leading Kenya in the upcoming Africa Cricket Association T20 Cup that kicks off from September in South Africa.

Kenya are placed alongside Cameroon, Mali and Sierra Leone, with the other pool of the North-Western qualifiers set to involve Rwanda, Ghana, Gambia and Nigeria.
The top-four winners will qualify to the next round - finals- involving qualified teams from the Southern qualifiers.
Onyango was in 2022 named as the Kenya Women's national team head coach ahead of that year's Kwibuka Tournament, and was also named in Kenya's team for the 2019 World Cup Challenge in Oman.
