Wacu, who has been playing since 2006, was part of the national team that took part in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Experienced women’s volleyball team setter Jane Wacu has announced that she will be taking a break from national team duties with the Malkia Strikers in order to persue other ventures.

In an interview on Nation, Wacu, who was part of the travelling volleyball contingent that represented the country in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, revealed that, according to her plans, the Tokyo summer games were supposed to be her last act with the team before taking the break.

“My aim was to do the Olympics then take a break to pursue other ventures and I feel it is the right time for that but this is not the end of me on the volleyball stage. I have done it all. I have played in every international event that any athlete would have loved to and I gave it all the best way I could. I take pride in the fact that during my reign, the team conquered some historic events among them the 2015 FIVB World Grand Prix in Australia," the athlete is quoted in the interview.

At the just concluded CAVB Volleyball Women’s African Nations Championships held in Kigali, Rwanda, the absence of Wacu, who had not travelled with the team on medical grounds, was felt as the youngsters had to dig deep in the new look national side in order to make it all the way to the finals and book their ticket to the 2022 World Championship set for Poland and Netherlands after a second place finish behind arch rivals Cameroon.

While reiterating that it is just a break, Wacu, who has had stints in France and currently in Seychelles went on to open the doors for any of the upcoming setters who needed her guidance as she thanked the people who have played a part in her career since 2006 when she started playing..

"I am available to guide and hold the hands of the upcoming setters to become better players in future. Let them reach out to me when they need direction or help in the sport. When I started to play, I was also guided and moulded to who I am today. I am taking a break for now but who knows what the future holds. I'm indebted to the Kenya Volleyball Federation under the leadership of Waithaka Kioni, the Kenya Prisons management, my family, fellow players and the media for supporting me. I can only get better," she added on the interview with Nation.
