the top eight finishers in the regular league qualify for the playoffs.
Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) leagues take a break for the festive season and is only expected to resume in the second weekend of January when teams will continue their quest for playoff slots.
Last season’s semi-finalists University of Nairobi (UoN) Dynamites are looking to replicate their good form when the league resumes with head coach Juma Kent confident of a playoff slot.
Before the break, the side had played 15 matches, four in the second leg and Kent is keen to guide the side to a top four finish in the regular season for favourable placing in the playoffs.
“In the second leg, we have played former champions Equity Hawks, Kisumu Lady Bucks, Eldonets and Eagle Wings, dropping points against the bankers. When we resume action, I will hope that we win at least half of the remaining matches for the chance to place either fourth or fifth in the log,” offered the tactician.
The varsity side made it to the top four in the last season but after losses to Hawks home and away as well as to Kenya ports Authority (KPA), Africa Nazarene University (ANU) and Zetech Sparks in regular season so far, they have their work cut out in the return leg.
Dynamites continue to miss the services of their forward Winnie Chebet who has been out with a knee injury. “We are not going to rush her recovery. I expect to have her back in training in February at the earliest,” Kent said.
KPA remains the team to beat in the women’s league with Hawks having shown signs of weakness with a shaky first leg where they lost two matches. The second leg is, however, expected to be a different ball game. Sparks are a third force to reckon with.
