This year's matches are set to be played in a best-of-three series from the quarters
After four rounds of regular league action, the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) men’s league enters the playoffs, this weekend, with the top eight finishers set to compete.
Defending champions Prisons Kenya who finished second in the regular league with two losses in 13 matches have their work cut out in their quest to defend their title.
The Denis Mokua-led warders head to the playoffs as one of the favourites, coming off a second-place finish at the CAVB club championships.
However, their finish in the regular league where they fell to former champions General Service Unit (GSU), a team they dethroned last season, ending a six-season dominance, points to just how competitive the men’s playoffs could get.
GSU are top of the league table, having suffered a single defeat to the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) this weekend, tainting an otherwise perfect run. However, their domination has been tested throughout the year, albeit in tournaments.
The paramilitary side plays Equity Bank in the best-of-three quarters who placed eighth in the regular league, making their first playoff appearance with an extended field. Prisons, on their part, play Administration Police Kenya (APK).
A third force in Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), winners of the Kenya Pipeline @50 tournament, are also in the running as the James Ontere-coached chase the elusive title. Finishing third on the log with 10 wins, the same as KFS and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) but with a better ratio, the dockers play Trailblazers, a side they defeated to lift the Pipeline tourney title.
Another highly-anticipated clash will see KFS take on the in-form KDF who placed fifth in the regular league, the duo is expected to give the ‘big boys’ a run for their money.
