Hit Squad captain Elizabeth Andiego on Sunday night added another gong to her impressive amateur boxing career as she scooped a gold medal in the now-concluded inaugural edition of the Mandela Africa Cup in South Africa.
The 2022 Africa Boxing Championships silver medalist, appearing in what was her first middleweight fight in Durban, outwitted Rady Gramane of Mozambique in all three rounds, winning by 4-1 on the judges' decision.
The scores were: 29-28, 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 and 27-30.
The win was Andiego’s first this year, and came with a cash prize of 5000 USD (Ksh. 670,300) awarded to all gold medalists across 25 weight categories.
Andiego, also hoping to make this year’s Paris Olympic Games in next month’s second World Qualification Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, was accompanied by Kenya’s welterweight champion Frizah Anyango, who lost in her quarterfinal bout to Cape Verde’s Gomes Moreira last Wednesday.
Andiego’s last international appearance came in February when she suffered a 5-0 Round of 32 loss to Lithuania’s Stonkute Gabriele at the Olympics 1st World Qualification Tournament in Busto Arsizio.
The duo, as per Boxing Federation of Kenya, will jet back into the country on Tuesday.
