Roma defeat Sassuolo 1-0 to get just three points away from the Champions League spots

Lorenzo Pellegrini's lovely effort from outside the box proved enough for AS Roma to clinch a critical 1-0 Serie A win over Sassuolo and stay in the quest for Champions League qualification.

The Giallorossi didn't shine, though, without Paulo Dybala, Chris Smalling and Rasmus Kristensen, as Daniele De Rossi's side dug deep to get closer to Thiago Motta's Bologna in fourth place.

Romelu Lukaku was close to scoring shortly after the kick-off, as he nodded Spinazzola's cross wide before doing the same with Pellegrini's pass, but from that moment on, the Belgian striker struggled to create chances against the visitors with ten men behind the ball.

The deadlock was finally broken when Pellegrini cut inside from the left and bent a right-foot curler into the far bottom corner.

Interestingly enough, Roma's ultimate strike was worth mentioning, as Sassuolo managed to fight back. Mile Svilar had a lot of work to do, beating away several attempts from Sassuolo players. Still, it stayed 1-0 on the scoreboard as De Rossi and his boys celebrated the fourth Serie A win in the last five games.
