You say corner kick, Arsenal say goal! Gunners thrash Leeds behind Rice-Timber show & Gyokeres' debut brace
Reading Time: 4min | Sat. 23.08.25. | 21:28
Mikel Arteta's men recorded a convincing 5-0 triumph over the EPL newcomers and can peacefully wait for the derby clash against Liverpool next week
Concede a corner kick against Arsenal and you'll concede something else as well. It's practically the worst mistake of your life. At least, it happened in Leeds United's case, as the Gunners destroyed them with these set pieces.
Declan Rice's crosses and Jurrien Timber's resourcefulness led to two goals today (in the 34th and 56th minutes), while the Dutchman also recorded an assist for Bukayo Saka in the first-half added time.
However, what can rejoice the Gunners' fans the most is that Viktor Gyokeres scored his two maiden goals in Arsenal's jersey. The first after a marvellous solo effort just three minutes after the break and the second in stoppage time from the spot.
Yet, this triumph came with a price tag. Arsenal did record a crushing 5-0 win, but also missed Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, who were both forced to leave the pitch with injuries, and the derby clash against Liverpool is in just eight days.

Bar the injuries, it was the perfect evening for Arsenal. Clean sheet, Viktor Gyokeres off the mark and Max Dowman made his debut.

Mikel Arteta might have surprised many by leaving a pretty indisposed Gabriel Martinelli on the bench and replacing him with the newcomer Noni Madueke. The former Chelsea player was very active at the beginning of the clash, but the leading role was played by one of Arsenal's defenders - Jurrien Timber.
The Dutchman first broke the deadlock in the 34th minute, following Declan Rice's corner kick (sounds familiar, doesn't it?) and then assisted to Bukayo Saka in the first minute of added time, as the Gunners handed a genuine knock-out to the rivals.
On the other hand, Leeds threatened once in the 20th minute, when Pascal Struijk powerfully headed the ball, but David Raya reacted superbly.
All eyes were once again on Viktor Gyokeres, who somewhat embarrassed himself in the 16th minute, wasting a colossal chance. Nevertheless, that did not affect the Swede, as it took him only three minutes after the break to score his maiden goal with Arsenal after a skilful solo effort.
Viktor Gyokeres is up and running in an Arsenal shirt - the relief is evident.

The home crew's destruction didn't stop there for a simple reason - when Arteta's men get a corner kick, they cannot stop themselves from scoring! Jokes aside, the 56th minute brought another Rice's corner, another melee in Leeds' box, and another Timber's goal to make it 4-0!

Given the result, Arteta had the opportunity to mix things up, so he gave a chance to the 15-year-old wonder Max Dowman and the acquisition from Valencia, Cristhian Mosquera. By the end of the game, the young Dowman threatened a few times, but the impression is that both sides simply looked forward to the ref's final whistle, as the winner had been known since the halftime break. Still, the home team managed to score their fifth goal, as Gyokeres was impeccable from the spot in added time.
Nevertheless, this victory came with a possibly expensive price tag for Arsenal. Namely, their two captains, Martin Odegaard and Saka, had to leave the pitch for injuries, which definitely cast a shadow on the Gunners' triumph and gave headaches to Arteta.
