The new season is scheduled to kick off next weekend
Mara Sugar head coach Francis Xavier is confident that the team will do better in the forthcoming 2023-2024 season after working on the areas that cost the team promotion last season.
Mara were among teams fighting for promotion last season but inconsistencies, according to Xavier cost the team that ended up finishing fourth.
The team finished behind Migori Youth, Murang'a Seal and Shabana in that order and will hope to make amends in the new season set to commence next week.
Xavier revealed that lack of consistency in posting positive results denied the team a place in the top flight but expressed hope in performing well in the new campaign.
The former midfielder said the team had used the pre-season period to address their weaknesses and improving the chemistry levels between the players.
"I believe we will have a good season. Inconsistencies cost us last season and other factors which we are trying our best to work on," he told Mozzart Sport.
Xavier who is a season old at the club also stated that it took the players long to adapt to his philosophy and by the time they were catching up, it was late.
The former AFC Leopards midfielder joined Mara in November last year, replacing John Baraza who left the outfit for Kakamega Homeboyz.
"It took time for the playing unit and I to have the right chemistry. But I think the new season will be quite different as we have had pre-season together," he said.
Meanwhile, Xavier said the team had found quality replacements for the two key players who left the club for top flight football.
Mara lost the duo of Dennis Maruti and Victor Ngume who joined Murang'a Seal and Kariobangi Sharks respectively.
"We lost only two players whom we have replaced. I feel the team is in good shape and ready for the season," he added.
