Worst half-time talk ever & captain Bruno 'The Saviour'

How Man United went from 17 shots in the first half to nearly losing the eight-goal thriller against Bournemouth?

"I think we need to find a different way to play sometimes. So we are thinking about that. We are working on that. Bournemouth is going to be a different world," said Ruben Amorim after Manchester United's 4-1 victory over the bottom-placed Premier League side, Wolverhampton, last week.

And the change was evident to everyone who watched the game against the Cherries last night. Unfortunately, it lasted for only 45 minutes...

The Portuguese gaffer didn't do what the public expected after his aforementioned statement, refusing to abandon the formation with three centre-backs. However, the Red Devils mindset seemed different.

They were constantly pressing the rivals, fighting for every ball, tackles were flying all over the pitch, and the visitors genuinely felt the "hell" of Old Trafford in the initial part of the game. The epilogue was 17 United's shots in 50 minutes of football (including added time) and two goals in Bournemouth's net.

Yes, the home crew again failed to eliminate the "black holes" from their game completely and conceded another goal out of nowhere, but Casemiro's header that put them in front in the final seconds of added time delivered justice in the nick of time - as United were way better and deserved the lead - and was supposed to ease Amorim's half-time talk.

Now, we'll probably never find out what the 40-year-old said to his lads during the break, but whatever it was, he probably shouldn't repeat it ever again, as that was arguably the worst half-time talk in history. At least that's how his team looked on the pitch once the second half kicked off.

Disjointed, unorganized, like a group of amateurs playing together for the first time after a long break from football. And even these harsh words cannot summarize United's terrible display when they returned to the pitch.

The tables turned quickly, as 2-1 shortly became 2-3, and a one-goal advantage turned into a one-goal deficit in less than 400 seconds after the break.

And Bournemouth would have probably exploited the Red Devils' confusion and scored another goal to finish the rivals had it not been for Bruno Fernandes.

United's captain has always been one of those high-energy players who inspire the rest of the team with words, passion, fight. Last night, he did it with magic, carrying the whole crew on his back.

A stellar free-kick banger completely reversed the situation, igniting the new wave of fire in disheartened players and disappointed fans. Matheus Cunha did make it 4-3 130 seconds later, but the credit goes to Bruno.

His goal restored the team's faith in victory, fired up the atmosphere at Old Trafford, and put additional pressure on the visitors, who didn't see it coming, which ultimately led to Adrien Truffert's poor reaction that resulted in the Brazilian's goal.

However, Eli Kroupi spoiled the party at the Theatre of Dreams, levelling the score just five minutes later, and pushed the Red Devils into another "black hole". Only thanks to the keeper, Senne Lammens, did they keep their head above water and win at least a point, though it was hanging in the balance throughout the final ten minutes.

It's a clear sign for Amorim that his job is far from over and that his team still doesn't know how to win, be smart, and hold on to a lead.

"It's really disappointing. We are really disappointed. Crazy game. It might look like we lost the two points in the second half but I think we lost them in the first half. We dominated and created so many chances. We had to go to half-time with a different result. In the end we deserved more."

"I think we started really well. We did a very good first half. The result should be completely different. And then, again, I think six minutes into the second half, similar to Nottingham [Forest], we lost the concentration and they scored two goals," said the Portuguese after the match.

And instead of lamenting the excellent first half, he should focus on the second. On both those six minutes he mentioned as well as those final minutes of the game when his crew barely scraped through and saved its skin, avoiding a defeat, which he did not touch on.

In the end, his words are meaningless without visible (re)actions on the pitch. Announcing changes in the press conference and then letting your team look like a bunch of amateurs - it's the manager's responsibility.

The fans don't need an announcement. When Amorim's United change their game and mindset, people will recognize it, even without the gaffer's guidelines.

And a thank-you card for Bruno wouldn't hurt. After all, the captain saved his skin last night. It's the least he deserved.
