Wissa’s transfer was done with just 30 seconds to spare

The DR Congo striker was close to coming back to Brentford

From 25 to 55 million pounds in the matter of one month. That’s how much the price of Yoane Wissa grew during the last days of the transfer window. When Bryan Mbeumo left for Manchester United and Newcastle came for Wissa, Brentford wanted to sign a replacement fist. Dango Ouattara came from Bournemouth but the Bees than said the Burkina Faso forward was a replacement for Mbeumo and rejected an improved, 35 million pounds bid from the Magpies. Wissa exploded (since he was promised he could go) and did basically the same as Alexander Isak – didn’t train with the team and published a statement on Instagram, accusing the club of broken promises. But the Bees didn’t budge until the last day, when Newcastle sold Isak for a record 130 million pounds and then overpaid for Wissa. But even then, the deal nearly failed and was actually completed just 30 seconds before the deadline, as per Sky Sports.

How did it happen? Well, the last day started with the information that Brenftord accepted a 55 million pounds bid, which was a massive overpriced figure, considering Wissa’s age (29). For example, Isak was bought from Real Sociedad in 2022 for 63 million as a 22-year old. But Wissa was ready and jumped on a car and drove to Newcastle in time to do his medical in local hospital. Everything was in order and the player was already at St. James Park doing some promo video for the club’s social media platforms, not knowing that he missed to sign one form. It was left to one of his representatives to sprint through Newcastle's training ground to find the striker and get him to hurriedly sign the document with a couple of minutes of the deal sheet extension period left. Eventually, the signing was ratified at 8.59pm, and the disaster was prevented. However the player will wait for his debut as a Magpie, as he went to DR Congo, where he will play World Cup qualifying matches against South Sudan and Senegal on September 5th and 9th.
