Mathare had lost both their opening games before turning the result against Sofapaka at Thika.

Mathare United tactician Ezekiel Akwana is a happy man after guiding his side to their first win of the season, his maiden victory since taking over the reins of the team in September.

Akwana was appointed to take over the Slum Boys following the exit of Frank Ouna who steered Mathare's ship to avoid relegation before leaving for Rwanda.

The former AFC Leopards coach compared his team's performance to that of the previous season where they went for 12 games without recording a win at some instance, terming it a big improvement.

"The win has a very big impact on the team because if you remember last season we played 12 matches without a win, and now winning in the third game means that there is improvement in the team and the boys are ready to push themselves," Akwana said.

The gaffer is now setting his eyes on keeping a clean sheet in what he refers to as 'climbing up the ladder' after narrowing the gap in the opening defeat, to winning after they minimized the goals they conceded.

"I feel good because we had played two games without a win but in the third, we won. I had said before that we are climbing the stairs. In the first game, we were beaten 3-0, in the second 1-0, and in our third, we won. In our next match, we shall try our best to maintain a clean sheet," he added.

Mathare United started their season on the wrong foot, going down by 3 clean goals to Bandari at Mbaraki in the opening match before being beaten by Ulinzi Stars in the second round match at Thika.

Mathare's response since they lost by three goals was superb, conceding only one goal against Ulinzi Stars and going ahead to win their third game, scoring twice in the process.

The win on Wednesday saw the climb off the relegation zone where they were bottom-placed to 11th with 3 points.
