Kenya, who will be playing in the tournament for the first time, qualified as one of the hosts alongside Tanzania and Uganda.
With the nature of tournaments and In a pool that consists of; DR Congo, Zambia, Morocco and Angola, the former Tusker FC forward explained the importance of the first match for Stars.
“The secret is to make sure they win the first match. That will be a confidence booster and give the team momentum for the rest of the tournament. We will all be behind them and I believe they can do it,” Wanga told Mozzart Sport.
The 39-year-old who represented Kenya over 45 times, including captaining the team to the CECAFA title in 2013, is confident that Stars can triumph despite being underdogs.
“When we won CECAFA in 2013, we were not the favourites ahead of the tournament, but we psyched ourselves up, won the first match and used that momentum to bag the trophy. I believe we can pull such a move again,” he added.
Wanga, meanwhile, urged fans to rally behind the team and take advantage of hosting the championship.
"The team will need fans to cheer them up and push them over the line. I urge Kenyans from all walks of life to fill Kasarani and cheer the boys. We must account for the advantage of hosting the tournament," urged the former Kakamega Homeboyz man.
