PSG destroyed Montpellier with a dominant attacking display and three well-taken goals at Parc des Princes
Paris Saint-Germain provisionally climbed to the top of Ligue 1 with a dominant 3-0 win over Montpellier on Friday night. Luis Enrique's side looked rampant as they leapfrogged Nice with a convincing display at Parc des Princes.
Luis Enrique fielded an extremely offensive-minded starting eleven, with Kylian Mbappe and Randal Kolo Muani joined by wingers Lee Kang-in and Ousmane Dembele. It was the latter who created most problems for the 11th-placed team from southern France.
With such a potent offensive line playing against you, you should do your best to keep the score goalless for as long as possible. Sadly for Michel Der Zakarian and his players, they kept it tight for just ten minutes.
Mbappe is usually expected to finish off Les Parisiens' attacking moves, but tonight, he showed that he can also create chances for his teammates. He skipped over Achraf Hakimi's low cross, drawing the attention of the away side's defenders and putting Lee in acres of space. The Korean had time to take a touch and steady himself before slamming an unstoppable dart into the top corner. It was the first Ligue 1 strike of the season for the former Mallorca and Valencia man.
It was a special night for Paris' captain Marquinhos, who got his 300th victory in a PSG shirt in all competitions. The long-serving Brazilian has already overtaken Marco Verratti, who left the club with 295 wins under his belt.
Dembele played a key part in the second goal for Paris. He picked up a forward pass from Warren Zaire-Emery and left it nicely with a backheel touch for the young prodigy to fire fiercely past Benjamin Lecomte and double the lead just before the hour mark. With how the teams have been playing, it was clear there wouldn't be a comeback for the Paladins.
Hakimi once again showed his immense vision and athleticism that made him the best right-back during his Inter Milan days. He evaded everyone, looked up and spotted Vitinha arriving on the edge of the area. The Moroccan put the ball just where the former Porto midfielder needed it - and the rest was easy.
Goncalo Ramos thought he added an injury-time fourth after Mbappe had teed him up with an elegant backheel, but sadly for the former Benfica striker, the assistant ref's flag was up.
This victory puts pressure on Nice, who host Stade Rennais on Sunday night with a chance to overtake the club from the French capital again.
