When it comes to Courtois, Madrid don't mind breaking rules

Los Blancos made an unprecedented exception and extended the custodian's deal for two more years, going against one of their strictest rules

Rules are meant to be broken. One just needs a good reason. And when you have it, regulations simply call for a violation.

Real Madrid, as arguably the greatest club in football, logically have a set of rules, but they also know that exceptions have to be made where it's necessary. And in the case of Thibaut Courtois, a rulebook is entirely irrelevant.

It states that Los Blancos do not extend contracts for more than one year to their players older than 30. The Belgian is 33, thus far beyond the age limit, but still got a two-year extension because Madrid know when to give credit where credit is due.

Courtois has been one of the team's best, most consistent, and most reliable players for some time, and Florentino Perez and Co. knew how to show their appreciation and gratitude, so the keeper will get a salary increase as well.

After all, custodians usually age like fine wine, so the period between the ages of - let's say - 33 and 38 is often their career best.

This way, Courtois will continue his spell at Santiago Bernabeu at least until 2027. He arrived in the Spanish capital in 2018 from Chelsea for €35 million and was always the first choice of every Madrid manager who coached him, from Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari, to Zinedine Zidane, Carlo Ancelotti, and Xabi Alonso.

With him between the posts, Los Blancos won 12 trophies, including three La Ligas and two Champions Leagues, so their fans can be delighted that this fruitful cooperation will continue.
