What's wrong with United? Where do we start...
Reading Time: 5min | Mon. 25.08.25. | 16:43
The management with no ideas, the coach with no consecutive wins, the lavish reinforcements with no goal contribution, the captain who can't score a penalty...
The previous season was horrendous for Man United, but everyone saw it as an exception, as a transition period, and a breaking point after which things would get to normal. For the first time since 1990, the Red Devils finished the top-tier season outside the top 10 and without a trophy or European competition to somewhat heal their wounds.
Still, the general opinion was that Ruben Amorim succeeded a mediocre squad with destroyed confidence from Erik ten Hag and that the June Transfer Window and the Portuguese's presence since the beginning of the season would bring a necessary change.
Well, not only did nothing change, but things seem even worse than before, perhaps exactly because of those high expectations everyone had had ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
In the opening two EPL rounds, United collected one point, thanks to a draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage yesterday. And if they had reasons to be positive after a quite undeserved defeat to Arsenal a week ago, now they have none.
Amorim is slowly but surely cementing his place among the worst managers in Premier League history while becoming the subject of ridicule in rival fans' jokes.
As shocking as it may sound, the Portuguese has led the team in more games (29) than the number of points he won (28)!
And when he's compared with the rest of the "Big Six" managers, his status gets even worse. Namely, Arne Slot, Pep Guardiola, and Thomas Frank - leading Liverpool, Man City, and Tottenham - needed two games to record consecutive EPL wins. It took five matches for Chelsea's Enzo Maresca, while Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta needed as many as nine games to notch up triumphs in a row.

🔴 Arne Slot - 2 games
🔵 Pep Guardiola - 2 games
⚪️ Thomas Frank - 2 games
🔵 Enzo Maresca - 5 games
🔴 Mikel Arteta - 9 games
Ruben Amorim hasn't achieved this in 29 PL games... 😬
But what about Amorim?
Well, Man United gaffer is still waiting to achieve back-to-back victories! After 29 matches?!
And it's not only about the wins. Amorim's team plays like a clueless crew and seems completely lost on the pitch, and the evidence to support that was clearly visible in both its EPL clashes.
In the first two games, the Red Devils created only one big chance (?!), but can you guess who did it? In a squad including Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, Mason Mount, Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Co. the custodian Altay Bayindir was the one to set up a goalscoring opportunity?!

The management has obviously thought that splurging money into reinforcements would be enough to return United to the pedestal on which it sat for years as the most renowned club in England. It turns out they are wrong and now seem to have run out of ideas about what to do next, without a plan B, without alternatives.
But let's say a few words about United's "reinforcements"...

Mbeumo, Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko - who came off the bench in both EPL games, which can be a slight mitigating factor - were paid over €225 million and have yet to make a goal contribution. In over 180 minutes of football (including added time), United netted just once and even that was Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz's own goal!
In two matches, the Brazilian and the Cameroonian clocked 90 minutes each with no notable impact. On the other hand, the Slovenian striker played 26 minutes against Arsenal and 38 minutes against Fulham, though his performance yesterday was particularly subpar. In over half an hour, he had no shots, dribbles, or ground duels won, and made only nine passes.
Finally, the captain Bruno's lack of impact has to be highlighted. After all, the skipper is there to lead the team, but also to bear the brunt of criticism.
Ever since he came to the Premier League and joined Man United, no player has missed more penalties than the Portuguese. With a negative tally of five wasted spot kicks, he shares this unflattering recognition with Mohamed Salah and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

He's now level in the Premier League for penalties missed since his debut in the competition:

Perhaps the captain should let somebody else shoot?
In the end, many United fans could have sworn that a season as poor as the previous one could never repeat. However, now, they are afraid this one could be even worse. The way it started gives no reasons for optimism, and something has to change. The only question is - what?
